Protecting deteriorating rubber insulators?

This question was asked on Facebook, and is one I have been meaning to ask for a while now.
The rubber insulators on Type I bayonets are known to begin deteriorating over time. They crack, become hard, and fall apart.
So what is the best method to preserve them or keep them in good condition?
We all know there are a ton of things that can be used on leather, but this is rubber. Some say silicon oil....any more specifics?
Some gun oils will destroy the rubber even faster. Who has had good success and with what?

Automotive Rubber seal protector and conditioner is only thing I know of that might work. I think have some here at the house and I have a couple of spare scabbards with insulators. If I do I will try it and let you know how it works.
