East German AKM Type I Scabbard Insulator Variations

Post by Mr. B. »

The DDR 6X3 type I scabbards have rubber insulators with a wide variety of mold marks. They make an interesting sub-collection when collecting Kalashnikov bayonets. Pictured below are my earliest DDR 6X3 bayonets and scabbards. The first one came with a two piece tan hanger and strap, (similar to the Hungarian pattern). The flat top wire cutter pivot on the scabbard designates this one as the first pattern. The second bayonet is the second variation with the tan leather hanger. The mold mark on the earliest insulator is 5998 , the second one has the more common 5998 followed by a (dot).

I have no idea what the differences are in the mold markings or their chronology. I try to establish what is early from the bayonets and scabbards that they came with. However the insulators are often worn and damaged and are easy to remove and replace either in the field or during rework/reissue. To establish a later issue note that one of the long series of numbers came to me in new, unissued, condition on a Viet Nam AKM wire cutter bayonet with a surplus new DDR type I scabbard. This would indicate a left over, late issue insulator!?!? It would be my best guess that the mold markings would indicate a military standard or acceptance number or possibly indicate a particular contractor or supplier. Or perhaps just a production lot or job number.

Here are pictures of other examples of DDR insulator mold marks that can be found. I am sure that there are others in these series as well. I don't really "collect" them, but pick them up when I have the opportunity. I would be interested in seeing pictures of other examples if anyone has them. As always, I would be interested in trading for or purchasing ones I don't have.
